Low Carbon Growth Plan for Gippsland
The Low Carbon Growth Plan for Gippsland maps out the lowest cost emissions reductions opportunities for Gippsland in the manufacturing, mining and freight; commercial and services; household; and land-based sectors. The Plan, developed with regional and expert input, shows that:
- Gippsland's economy could save almost $100 million a year by reducing its emissions
- Gippsland could reduce its greenhouse emissions by up to 10% below 2000 levels by 2020 (excluding the power sector)
The Plan is the first region-wide Low Carbon Growth Plan produced in Australia and shows that all sectors have a part to play in the transition to a low carbon economy. Seventy percent of the opportunities identified are already profitable and can save businesses and households money. These include improving energy efficiency in industry, commercial businesses and households, and improving the fuel efficiency of vehicles.
The plan also identifies that:
- $44 million a year could be saved in the manufacturing, mining and freight sector by 2020
- $38 million a year could be saved in the commercial and services sector by 2020
- Building Gippsland’s 15,000 new homes to a higher standard could reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling in those homes by 30% by 2020
- Gippsland could both reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase agricultural productivity at the same time, by improving the carbon stored in soil and vegetation, reducing emissions by livestock and strategic reforestation
